The Advocacy Learning Center

Florida Resource Center For Women and Children, Inc. was chosen by The
Advocacy Learning Center through Praxis International, Manavi and the Office On
Violence Against Women to attend a two year experiential course created to
examine the vision, identify the principles and knowledge and practice the skills
and qualities that make advocacy a powerful force in the movement to end
violence against women.
Working with other advocates throughout the country, FRCWC is developing new
ways to define and structure advocacy from
• Engaging and working with survivors to
• Strategizing and acting to change systems and community responses
The Advocacy Learning Center curriculum presents conceptual frameworks and
theoretical foundations that can strengthen FRCWC’s application of advocacy.
Program teams including both management and front-line staff are moving
through the course together. Over the two year period, FRCWC will
complete/participate in:
• 3 introductory audio conference sessions in the first month
• 5 day retreat in Minneapolis
• 2 site visits to other Advocacy Centers
• 3 day training in Minneapolis
• 2 self-study courses
• Quarterly audio conference trainings/webinars
The core activities of advocacy include: connecting, understanding, analyzing,
strategizing, implementing and adapting.
The framework that these activities provide distinguishes advocacy work from
other fields, such as psychology, social work and law, all of which greatly
influence advocacy but are distinct from it. By examining each activity and
learning the particular skills, knowledge, principles and qualities necessary to
carry out the activity, FRCWC will improve both our advocacy practice and the
philosophical approach that it is built upon.
Our class includes domestic violence centers, sexual assault programs,
immigration centers and abuse in later life programs from: Pennsylvania, North
Dakota, Alabama, Georgia, New Hampshire, Utah, California, Florida, Arizona,
Ohio, Oregon, New York and West Virginia.
FRCWC began the two year training in September, 2010 and is very excited to be
a part of such a progressive and meaningful project to end violence against
women.
